Reading support

This may include support with:

• Phonological and phonemic awareness
• Recognising and identifying letters and sounds

• Breaking words into sounds
• Word recognition and decoding
• Reading fluency and accuracy
• Vocabulary development
• Reading comprehension
• Understanding and sequencing information from texts
• Developing effective reading strategies

Goal: To develop accurate, fluent and meaningful reading skills, so that a child can decode words, understand what they read, and approach reading with greater confidence, independence and joy.

Writing support

This may include support with:

• Letter formation and handwriting
• Fine-motor and visual-motor skills that support writing – pencil grip
• Spelling and sound-to-letter relationships
• Sentence construction
• Grammar and punctuation
• Organising ideas
• Written expression
• Vocabulary and word choice
• Paragraph structure
• Planning, drafting and editing written work

Goal: To develop the skills needed to express ideas clearly and confidently in written form, while improving spelling, sentence construction, organisation and written independence.

Number concepts & mathematical skills

This may include support with:

• Number recognition and counting
• Number sense and quantity
• Number relationships and place value
• Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
• Mathematical vocabulary and symbols
• Mental mathematics and calculation strategies
• Fractions, decimals and percentages
• Measurement, time and money
• Patterns and sequences

Goal: To develop a strong understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts, so that a child can calculate accurately, recognise relationships between numbers and apply appropriate strategies with increasing confidence and independence.

Mathematical reasoning & problem-solving

This may include support with:

• Understanding mathematical language and instructions
• Identifying the important information in a problem
• Selecting the appropriate operation or strategy
• Breaking complex problems into manageable steps
• Applying mathematical concepts to real-life situations
• Explaining mathematical thinking and reasoning
• Checking answers and identifying errors
• Developing flexible problem-solving skills

Goal: To help a child understand what a mathematical problem is asking, choose effective strategies, explain their thinking and apply their mathematical knowledge to solve problems independently.

Organisation & planning

This may include support with:

• Plan and sequence tasks
• Break larger tasks into manageable steps
• Organise books, materials and information
• Understand and manage time
• Prioritise tasks
• Follow routines and schedules
• Prepare for tests, projects and assignments
• Use checklists, planners and other organisational strategies

Goal: To help a child plan ahead, organise their workload and approach tasks systematically, so that they can manage their academic responsibilities with greater confidence and independence.

Task management & self-regulation

This may include support with:

• Manage distractions
• Monitor their own progress

Goal: To help a child develop greater self-awareness, focus and self-management so that they can start, manage and complete tasks more independently.
